Los Altos Hills incorporated in 1956 to preserve “the rural atmosphere of the foothills,” and the town’s tough zoning regulations have helped it maintain a low-density, small-town environment.
There are no commercial businesses other than a bookstore at Foothill College in the town of 8,300. Parcels must be at least one acre in size, with just one primary residence per parcel under the town’s municipal code. Los Altos Hills remains one of Silicon Valley’s most affluent communities, with a median household income of $206,000, according to United States Census Bureau data. Some 23 percent of the population is 65 or older, and 85 percent of residents 25 or older hold at least a bachelor’s degree. In 2014, Forbes ranked Los Altos Hills as No. 45 on its list of America’s Most Expensive ZIP Codes, with a median home price of $2,896,103.
The town boasts an 85-mile system of pathways and trails for strollers, joggers, bicyclists, and equestrians. In 2005, Los Altos Hills remodeled its Town Hall and installed solar panels. The town includes “solar monitor” information, which updates every 15 minutes, on its website. Los Altos Hills operates the Westwind Community Barn, a historic property for stabling horses and equestrian training. The annual Los Altos Hills Hoedown takes place at the barn.
